Reaction of SSM regarding workers and children care in times of pandemic

SSM received multiple complaints of mothers, workers, who after the end of maternity leave used the right to sick leave for care of a child up to 3 years and these illnesses, although in a period of emergency and health crisis in the country they are not covered by the Regulation on leave of absence from work for the care of a child up to 10 years.

These are mothers who are employed and can not work because the kindergartens are closed, as well as mothers who return to work after maternity leave and face problems because the children can not be taken care of so they are out of work, and among which there are also single mothers.

The Federation of Trade Unions of Macedonia considers that it is necessary to specify the Decrees and to cover all cases for full care of children up to 10 years by providing the right to paid leave of one of the parents, as long as the health crisis lasts and kindergartens do not work, as well as schools and other institutions for care and education of children.

SSM addressed this issue to the Government and the MLSP and we expect, to overcome this problem through the social dialogue by accepting our indication and taking the necessary measures and procedures by the competent institutions as soon as possible.

Trade Union organizing of workers is necessary precisely for the untimely reaction and overcoming of the problems we all face, therefore we appeal in the future to a increased trade union organizing in order jointly to contribute in solving all related problems.

In the coming period, SSM will pay special attention to the vulnerable category of the population, women, the long-term unemployed, people with disabilities, etc.
