The Federation of Trade Unions of Macedonia, within the activities for drafting a new Labor Law, submitted its proposals to the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy in February 2019.
In addition to the other proposals for improvement of labor legislation, in direction of protecting workers' rights and ensuring a balance between work and family life, CCM proposed that Saturday and Sunday to be days of weekly rest as a rule.
Traditionally, in our country and in the countries from the regions, the days from the weekend are days of weekly rest for the purpose of respecting family traditions and protection of workers' in accordance with ILO Convention on weekly rest No.106.
Starting from the frequent discussions about the need Sunday to be a non-working day for all workers, especially in the countries of from region, as well as the positive example of Montenegro in this regard, the Federation of Trade Unions of Macedonia demands Saturday and Sunday to be treated as a days off, rather than the current definition - "Rest day is Sunday or another day of the week."
Analyzes and examples show that workers will be more productive and will have more time for family, rest and professional upgrading and training.
In addition, CCM suggested full-time work not be longer than 38 hours per week, instead of the current 40 hours.
The demands and commitments of the Federation of Trade Unions of Macedonia are progressive, developmental and motivating which will significantly affect the increase of labor productivity, but also will increase the protection of workers' rights and needs. CCM believes that promoting workers' rights and creating a legal framework for respect for the democratic values will create grounds and assumptions that will keep the young population in the country, despite the trend of emigration characteristic of the recent period.
