HEALTHY AND SAFE WORKING CONDITIONS ARE PART OF DEcent Work

Healthy and safe working conditions are at the heart of the ILO concept of workers' right to decent work.

Problems with safety and health at work are a global challenge and in this regard, the Confederation of Trade Unions of Macedonia (CSM) points out that it is necessary to follow the European and global good practices of countries that have made significant progress in this area.

By creating, above all, a legal framework that ensures decent working conditions for workers, we preserve their health, encourage productivity and directly influence the reduction of the outflow of labor from the country in search of better working conditions with full guarantees of health and safety protection.

We believe that the laws in this area in the country must be further specified and harmonized with European and global legislation, as well as their implementation and realization must be seriously monitored.

It is particularly important to monitor the impact of new digital technologies on workplaces and the connection with possible challenges to health and safety at work.

OSH management systems must change and adapt to the application of new working methods and the automation of work tasks.

In addition, efforts should be made to increase awareness among employers about the importance of investing in workplace safety, because for the development of the economy and society, investments in human potential and the protection of their health and safety at the workplace are the most important.

Preventive activities of all stakeholders in society, government bodies, employers and workers are the most important part of the activities to improve the state of healthy and safe working conditions, The goal is to prevent situations from occurring so that accidents and loss of human lives do not occur.

The emphasis is on employers, who are obliged to assume their obligations and responsibilities and create safe working conditions in their companies, while workers are obliged to respect the obligations for the use of personal protective equipment and the rules for the safe performance of work tasks, as well as to inform and indicate whenever measures for their safety and protection are not taken.

SSM organizes training and counseling for its membership and workers on the rights and obligations related to the creation of healthy and safe working conditions, informs and trains workers on full compliance with the legal provisions for the safe performance of work tasks, as well as on the possibility of cooperation with the employee representative for OSH, the union representative, as well as the right to file a complaint with the DIT whenever workers' rights in this area are violated.

CSM advocates that problems and issues related to healthy and safe working conditions should be regulated and further specified by Collective Agreements, primarily at the employer level, in which case the employer and the union as the representative of the workers jointly regulate the rights and obligations in this area according to the concrete and specific needs of the company.
